Hi Ross,
i’m enjoying this blog and the video presentations very much. A month ago i was struck by the idea to take a linux certification exam. I looked at Linux+ and took some sample tests and it’s totally easy. There are questions like how do you fix your laser printer if it starts to make weird sounds
Totally silly for a linux cert. I’m a slackware user since late 2004, so i asked on irc in ##slackware, what would be the best distro-independent cert. They said go for the LPIC-I. That’s how i found lpi.org and your blog. So now i’m reading your book, the exam cram, making notes and preparing to pass the exam. I can say just now that though the book is perfectly well written, some parts are horribly outdated. For example, i’m now at part4:hardware, and it’s mostly good for historical reference now.
sndconfig –> alsaconf
usb modules list is obsolete for 2.6
there is no scsi_info
there is no usbmgr
there is no /proc/bus/usb/drivers
hotplug –> udev (with all the consequences, like you can’t see the upper limit of possible scsi luns by doing ls -1 /dev/sd* | wc -l, it’ll just show your current sata partitions and disks)
This will be the end of my long comment. Thanks for reading and thanks for releasing such a quality book. I know you’re working on an update but i’ll probably be LPIC-I certified by the time it gets released…
All the best,
V’yacheslav, Ukraine.
P.S. Consider growing your beard again, you look so much better with it
P.P.S And do us more videos, please!

Oh good, I love doing these, and people are right, the LPIC 1 is the way to go, but don’t forget to go and scoop up the Linux+ sometime after it, it’s just too easy and gets you that extra cert point if you’re interviewing!
Thanks for reading, and let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
